Originally from Sri Lanka, the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery is an organization that works under the teachings of Gautama Buddha.

With more than 40 branches around the world, the monastery established the Mahamevnawa Buddhist temple in Dubai in 2009.

For many years, this was the only Buddhist temple in the country to cater to more than 500,000 Buddhist residents.

The Mahamevnawa Buddhist temple is located in the quiet part of the Jumeirah neighborhood, and it hasn’t only become a place of worship but also an oasis for Buddhists.

Those who visit the temple would often say that this place is their refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and it allows them to practice their faith freely despite being away from home.

Things to Know

Things to Remember When Visiting Buddhist Temples in Dubai

Although these Buddhist temples have become tourist attractions, they’re still places of worship. So, here are some tips that you need to keep in mind when visiting them:

  • Wear proper clothing.

You’re visiting a religious place, so avoid wearing anything revealing and make sure that your shoulders and legs are covered, whether you’re a man or woman.

You should also take off your shoes and hat before entering the temple as a sign of respect.

  • Never touch or point at statues.

The statues of Buddha should be respected, so avoid pointing at them or touching them during your visit.

If you’re visiting with kids, instruct them to avoid going near or touching any statues, and to avoid running around inside the temple.

It’s also very important to ask permission before taking any pictures and avoid using flash, especially when there are people praying inside.

What to Expect from Weather in Dubai’s Buddhist Temples

Winter: Winter season in Dubai lasts from December to March, and it’s the best time to visit Dubai because of the favorable weather. With temperatures lower than usual, you can easily explore different tourist attractions without worrying about the heat.

Summer: From June to September, Dubai experiences its hottest weather with temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius during the day time. This makes it difficult to go around because of the heat and people would rather stay indoors during the summer.

Transition period: Dubai has two transition periods – from April to May and October to November – where the weather can get more unpredictable as the city switches seasons.
