Skip the Needle Pricks: Different Types of Tailoring in Dubai

Ever struggled with a garment that just couldn’t nail that Goldilocks vibe? Too loose, too tight—before the suit or dress finally fits? With hand-me-downs courtesy of my older siblings, I believe I’ve danced that jig aplenty.

That’s why alterations or custom threads are my lifesavers. But finding the best tailors in Dubai on my own? Intimidating. I say scope out referrals in your crew to save some dirhams and snag the right style.

But before you strut into a tailor’s lair, school yourself on the different types of tailoring in Dubai. Collaborate with your tailor—don’t just nod your way out! Check out my notes below, then hit the stitching scene!

What types of tailoring services are available in Dubai?

Want a custom-made suit or an altered gown? Some of the tailoring services available in Dubai are bespoke, made-to-measure, ready-to-wear, traditional clothing, and specialty options.

Bespoke

Bespoke

Bespoke tailoring in Dubai is all about luxury and individuality. You get multiple fittings and can choose fabrics from places like Italy and Britain, perfect for anyone wanting something unique.

Starting in 17th-century London, bespoke tailoring has been around for centuries. Nowadays, it takes about 12 weeks to make a suit, so you’ll need a bit of patience.

If you’re curious about how much a tailored suit costs in Dubai, well, it starts at around AED 2,000 for a two-piece suit and AED 2,800 for a three-piece suit. It can be a bit pricey, but you might just end up with something truly one-of-a-kind.

Specialty Unforms and Costumes

Specialty Unforms and Costumes

Dubai’s bespoke tailoring scene goes beyond the ordinary. These tailors aren’t just stitching up basic shirts and pants—they also dive into specialty tailoring.

For one, many athletes in Dubai don’t settle for off-the-rack sportswear. Nope, they’re getting custom gear that’s dialed into their every move. Whether it’s for a solo sprinter or a whole team, these tailor-made outfits are all about peak comfort and performance.

And let’s not forget about the entertainers! They’re not messing around with generic costumes, either. They’re getting bespoke designs that scream “wow” on stage. Just a heads up, prices vary depending on how big and complex you want your outfit to be.

Made-to-Measure

Made-to-Measure

Made-to-measure tailoring is great if you want a custom fit with less waiting time than bespoke. For example, your suit will typically be ready in 8 to 10 weeks!

Instead of creating a unique pattern, the tailor will tweak an existing one based on your measurements. Don’t fret, though. You can still get some customization for style, buttons, and linings.

Just note that some tailors adjust the suit during creation for a better fit, while others alter it afterward. For me, the first option is better to avoid proportion issues.

Ready-to-Wear (RTW)

Ready-to-Wear (RTW)

If you’re in a hurry or can’t be bothered to spend too much, ready-to-wear (RTW) is the way to go in Dubai! This clothing is right off the rack, and you can get quick alterations for a perfect fit.

While some folks might have doubts about RTW, I think it’s all about how you rock the style. The selection changes every season too, so there’s always something new to check out. All in all, it’s a fun and easy way to update your wardrobe without the wait!

Traditional

Traditional

Traditional tailoring mixes Emirati and South Asian styles, giving a nod to Dubai’s diverse culture. Tailors take pride in crafting iconic pieces like the Abaya (long and loose robe-like garment) and Kandura (ankle-length Arab dress), starting at AED 125.

And when it comes to fashion, I reckon you can’t miss the Indian and Pakistani flair lighting up the scene. Prices vary, starting from AED 25 for saree stitching and going up to AED 440 for a stylish coat pant or two-piece suit.

Bridal and Special Occasions

Bridal and Special Occasions

Dubai’s tailors are pros when it comes to bridal and fancy events. They whip up custom gowns from luxe materials like silk and lace, ensuring they fit like a dream and offering killer design advice.

And if you’re on the fence about whether it’s your thing, no worries! Dubai tailors have your back, whether you’re into traditional bridal vibes or more Western-style dresses. Budget-wise, I believe you’re looking at AED 12,000 on average for bridal tailoring.

Now, onto those evening shindigs! There are tailor-made options for party gowns bound to make a splash. Prices vary depending on how fancy you want to get. Though obviously, they’re usually a bit easier on the wallet compared to bridal gowns.

Alteration Services

Alteration Services

Got some clothes that need a little TLC in Dubai? No worries! Whether it’s a quick fix like shortening pants or something more fancy like reviving an old favorite, the city’s got tailors who can work wonders.

You’re looking at about AED 25 to 40 for alterations, but I think there’s probably room to negotiate, especially if you’re a friend’s referral. Just talk to your tailor, choose your fabrics, and let them work their magic.
